🎨 How to color it

Color the city cleaner truck bright teal, the big arrow sunny yellow, the driver’s uniform navy blue, and the leaf pile in rusty orange, gold, and brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the tire treads, window frames, and tiny leaves, then switch to broader strokes for the truck body and sidewalks. Try making the spinning brush fade from dark bristles near the center to lighter tan tips, as if it is kicking up autumn dust.

Under the sycamores, Pax rubbed the tiny brass bolt in his pocket until it felt warm as toast. He only wanted to drive the sweeper one block without asking Mr. Vale to take over. The truck smelled like wet leaves and old rubber, and its brushes whispered shff-shff-shff along the curb. Pax had found the bolt under the driver’s seat that morning and decided, privately, that it was lucky. Then a gust lifted a cloud of leaves over the windshield, and his stomach made a small knot.

He eased the truck forward anyway, past brick porches and sleepy windows. At the corner, the round brush clanked and stopped. Pax climbed down, cheeks hot in the chilly air. There, wedged near the bristles, was his brass bolt’s twin missing from a loose plate. To fix it, he had to give up his lucky one. “Don’t tell anyone,” he whispered, tightening it with fingers that shook.

The brush spun again, louder and steadier, sweeping a path through leaves shaped like little hands. Pax drove back grinning, not because the bolt had magic, but because he had driven without it. If you spot the pile by the curb, keep the secret: one tiny bolt stayed behind so Pax could come home braver.
