Every afternoon, when the air smelled of hot grass and dusty bark, Pippa counted the three low clouds over the plain and tried not to wiggle her branches. She wanted the savanna to play with her, so she invented Cloud-Bump: tap a branch toward a cloud, whisper “boof,” and score one point if its shadow hopped over a tuft of grass.
Until one day, Pippa boofed so hard that the nearest cloud’s shadow leaped right onto Gamba the giraffe’s lunch map. Because of that, Gamba nibbled the wrong acacia and folded the map in his mouth like a soggy leaf. Because of that, the guinea fowl referee declared the whole plain “temporarily misplaced” and began marching in circles, yelling, “Left is delicious!”
Pippa shook with giggles until the map fluttered onto her highest fork. Finally, she made a new rule: clouds could only be bumped toward home. Shadows slid back, Gamba found the water path, and the guinea fowl bowed as if this had been their plan. Next time you spot the tiny leaves on Pippa’s high branches, check whether one is still hiding the taste of hot grass and dusty bark.
