🎨 How to color it

Color the beach house sandy tan, the palm fronds bright green, the seashell path coral and cream, and the ocean waves turquoise blue. Use chunky crayons for the big roof, sky, and water, then switch to a sharper crayon tip for the little shutters, porch rails, and shell ridges. Try making the sun golden yellow with orange rays so it feels extra warm over the cool blue sea.

Under the porch, Zadie shook her pail and listened: clink, clink, clink. She had invented the Waiting Shell Game. If she could find one shell with a moon stripe before the next big wave hissed in, she would leave it on the windowsill for the house to keep.

She stepped off the porch, past the warm wooden rails and down the sandy path. The air smelled salty and sweet from fallen coconuts. “Not yet,” whispered Zadie, letting three plain shells stay where they were. A gull swooped close and snatched the cracker from her pocket. That was the price of playing slowly.

At last, when the sun sat round and quiet, a tiny shell winked between two pebbles. Inside was a pale stripe like a secret smile. Zadie carried it back, but on the porch she heard clink, clink, clink from her pail: the plain shells had been singing too. Next time you spot the shell path, can you guess which one waited longest?
