At the top of Whisper-Whish Hill, Bram tucked one round snowball beside his scarf and whispered, “No dropping it till the bottom.” That was his secret challenge. The snow smelled clean and cold, and his wooden sled creaked like a little door. Saff the fox leaned close on her own sled. “Race you past the three pines,” she said. Down they went—shhh, shhh, shhh—past puffed branches and bright flakes.
Halfway down, Bram’s snowball bounced out and rolled straight to a squirrel pushing a much bigger one. Oof! The two snowballs bumped and became one lumpy, lovely giant. Bram gave up the race, paid the price with snowy mittens, and helped roll it home. Saff tied her scarf around it like a crown. By supper, every sledder had added a snowball. Here’s the secret: next time you spot those round snow piles, you’ll know where Bram’s too-big joy began.
