🎨 How to color it

Layer deep ruby through the heart’s outer bands, antique gold on the braided border, forest green in the leaf-shaped knots, and soft teal in the small spirals. Use sharp colored pencils and follow each over-under strand in short sections so the crossings stay clear. Add a subtle parchment beige background or leave narrow white highlights along the knot edges to make the woven heart look raised.

Each evening, Orla shelved returned books in the cloister archive and warmed her hands over the lamp before the last bell. She wanted the stone reading hall to feel less cold for whoever arrived before dawn, so she invented a game with no winner: leave one comfort, take no credit. A sharpened pencil. A dry ribbon for wet hair. A square of honey cake wrapped in waxed paper, smelling faintly of cloves.

One night, the lamp guttered blue, and the carved desk drank the candlelight into its old Celtic grooves. Because Orla placed her final cake beside a stranger’s cracked spectacles, the knots brightened like embers under ash. Because of that, every secret gift she had hidden appeared as a tiny glimmer in the wood, crossing and recrossing without a name. Finally, Orla blew out the lamp and left the hall colder than before, except where nobody was watching, the heart of the desk kept shining.
