Every day, Dorian counted the knots in the braided tide ring and tapped his copper bubble three times against his tooth: tink, tink, think. It looked like junk, but inside it rattled the laugh of the first current that had ever tricked him. Then one day it answered with four taps.
Because of that, he chased the sound through water smelling of cold stone and saltweed; because of THAT, every spiral current began finishing his questions before he asked them. “Rude little bubble,” he muttered, grinning despite himself.
At last Dorian bit the bubble—not hard, just enough—and it popped into a map of giggling eddies. The tide ring had been hiding a shortcut for centuries, and curiosity had run off with the key: tink, tink, think.
