🎨 How to color it

Color the coffee cup creamy ivory, the donut golden brown with strawberry-pink glaze, the spoon soft silver, and the cafe plants in deep and mint greens. Use sharp colored pencils for the curling steam ribbons and tiny glaze shine marks, then switch to broader strokes for the round plate and arched window. Try a cool blue-gray street outside the window so the warm donut and coffee feel like a secret hiding place.

The story behind this coloring page

The Steam That Wrote Doors — Before sunrise, the alley cafe held its breath behind the arched window. Read the full story →

Before sunrise, the alley cafe held its breath behind the arched window. Vera set one glazed ring beside the first cup and gripped a plain silver spoon from her mother’s apron pocket. She wanted to unlock the cafe alone, but the sign outside would not swing until the coffee answered. From the cup rose a thin, cinnamon-smelling thread of steam that bent away from her hand.

Behind the potted leaves, the old kettle ticked three times. Vera dipped the spoon. Its handle trembled like a cold key. “All right,” she whispered, and stirred once. The steam curled higher, then folded into loops, making a doorway only she could see. Through it came the soft clink of every morning the cafe had ever served: boots on tile, sugar tins opening, rain on the glass.

Vera stirred a second time, braver now. The sign creaked awake outside. Ever since that first opening, cafe steam has curled in loops before rising straight, making tiny doors for shy mornings to enter. If you catch one above a hot cup, see if it remembers Vera’s silver spoon.
