🎨 How to color it

Color the twisting slide sunny yellow with aqua seam bands, the duck bright golden-orange, the palm fronds leafy green, and the mushroom fountain coral red with white spots. Use markers for the wide slide sections and pool border, then switch to a sharp pencil for the railings, palm trunks, and thin water lines. Try shading the slide from pale yellow at the top to deeper gold near the splash so it feels sun-warmed all the way down.

Under the high palms, Della pressed one ear to the warm railing and waited for the water slide’s last note. Every rider made a different music: a whoop in the tunnel, a hollow boom around the bend, then a bright splash that smelled of sunblock and clean pool water. Della wanted to hear the tiny sound after the splash, the one everyone missed while laughing and shaking drops from their hair.

She sat beside the splash pool until the clouds drifted like slow boats. A duck paddled near the edge, leaving soft V-shaped ripples. The mushroom fountain ticked and trickled. “Almost,” Della whispered, though nobody had asked. At last, after one huge gush rolled out of the slide, the pool went quiet enough for a silver plink-plink-plink to rise from below.

The duck dipped its beak under the foam and lifted a little chain of smooth blue beads, hidden in the drain grate where no one thought to look. They were not lost jewelry; each bead chimed when water touched it, making the slide’s secret ending. Della smiled and waited for the next rider, because patience had given the water time to sing. Next time you see the duck by the splash, can you imagine the silver plink after the roar?
