Before the upper lanes learned to shine, Sora counted aircraft by the hush they left between towers. She wanted one overdue medicine skiff to reach the west clinic before the fog folded the city in half, but the guide beacons had gone dark, and every rooftop smelled of wet metal and cold ozone.
She climbed to the prism bridge, pressed her gloved hand to the dead control rail, and heard only a small click inside her visor. No engineer had ever opened that seam; no inspector had thought to look there. Behind the smoked glass waited a seed of light, warm as tea in both hands, placed there years ago by a route keeper who had mended streets without signing her name. Sora did not keep it. She tipped the light into the rail.
The skyways answered in thin blue lines, one after another, gentle enough not to wake the sleeping apartments below. The medicine skiff followed them home. Ever since, prism city keeps a quiet glow in its high lanes, because one gift was hidden where nobody thought to look.
