Every day after last bell, Ren walked the east corridor and counted the lockers that clicked shut: twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three. He wanted to find the soft hum that trembled through the floor before the janitor swept it away with lemon-smelling soap and rattling keys.
Until one day, the hum answered his footsteps—one low note, then two bright ones. Because of that, Ren stopped beside the tallest locker and pressed his ear to the cold metal, but the sound slipped under his shoes. Because of that, he knelt by a cracked floor tile where nobody ever looked and pried up a loose corner.
Under it waited a tiny glass compass, spinning without north, glowing blue as a winter moon. “Where are you pointing?” Ren whispered. The needle swung toward the silent doors at the hallway’s end, and curiosity ran ahead of him so fast he had to hurry after it. Next time you see his clenched backpack strap, can you tell whether he is walking away—or following the hum?
