Past the squeaky gate, Zazie tapped each flat stone with her boot. She had given herself a challenge: count every porch board before the bat made one loop around the chimney. Tap-tap, thump-thump! The cold air smelled like pumpkin and dusty wood, and the old house leaned close as if listening.
“One, two, three—zoom!” Zazie raced up the steps. A round face popped into the tall window, not scary at all, just grinning with tiny fangs and bumpy horns. Then the twist came from above: every time Zazie shouted a number, one star blinked brighter, as if the sky was playing too.
