🎨 How to color it

Try smoky purple for the haunted house siding, slate gray for the shingled roofs, pumpkin orange for the two jack-o’-lanterns, and pale mint for the chimney ghost. The roof tiles, brick chimney, porch rails, and round window panes are small but simple, so use a sharpened crayon or pencil and color one section at a time. Add a secret glow by shading the moon and stars buttery yellow, then giving the two attic windows matching golden circles.

Under the bed, where dust smelled like old socks, Romy tied a blue ribbon to her paper moon lantern. She had cut it herself, snip-snip, with wobbly edges and a proud little grin. The attic window of the tall house looked dark. Romy whispered, “I can fix that.”

She stepped outside, past the crunchy grass and the pumpkins with candle-smoke noses. On the roof, a bat squeaked, “Need black for the face?” Romy had no paint, so she traded her blue ribbon for a pinch of soft chimney soot. Her fingers turned smudgy. Her lantern got two soot eyes and a smile.

Back inside, Romy hung it in the round attic window with a strip of spider silk. The house blinked gold. If you peek at the round windows, you might spot Romy’s handmade moon lantern shining where the dark used to be.
