At the orchard mill, Quill lined banana moons around the breakfast bowl and waited for the carved spoon to hum. It always hummed when everything was in the right place. This morning it only gave one dull tap, like a pebble in a shoe.
Quill climbed over a wall of granola, crossed the berry hollow, and squeezed past kiwi-green fans that smelled sharp and sunny. A striped seed rolled from under the spoon’s handle. “Not there,” it whispered. Quill followed it beyond the safe banana circle, paying for the trip with sticky berry juice on both sleeves and one oat crumb in his hair.
Under the spoon bowl sat a tiny door made of two sunflower seeds. Behind it, a seed whisperer kept a cupboard of lost crunches. She handed Quill one pale oat. “This fell out when you sorted too neatly,” she said. Quill tucked it into the empty space between fruit and granola. The spoon sang low and golden, and the whole bowl felt like a room that had saved his chair. Next time you see the carved spoon, see if you can find where the hum came home.
