🎨 How to color it

Color the dumpling wrappers creamy ivory, the bamboo steamer honey tan, the teapots jade green, and the hanging lantern a warm gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the dumplings’ tiny wrinkle lines and the repeating rainbow floor tiles, then switch to smooth marker fills for the big steamer bands. Try shading the candlelight outward in pale yellow so the clouds and teapots feel softly lit.

Before the lanterns were lit, Arden rolled seven soft circles of dough on the cool table, breathing in ginger, scallion, and warm flour. He wanted each dumpling to show his own hand, so he pressed his thumb into a tiny clay seal shaped like a cloud and marked every wrapper before folding it shut. The seal had belonged to no one important, or so the shelf keeper said, but Arden liked its weight and the way it left a swirl that looked almost alive.

Steam rose with a hush when the bamboo lid lifted. The cloudy marks on the dumplings did not vanish; they opened like little windows. In each swirl, Arden saw quick flashes: an old cook laughing over chive filling, a traveler warming her hands around tea, a child tapping chopsticks to hear the table sing. “It remembers,” Arden whispered.

The teahouse grew quiet around him, as if the walls were listening too. Arden set the seal beside the sauce bowl, proud of the thumb-smudged handle and the dumplings he had shaped one by one. Next time you spot those crimped tops, see if one cloud-swirl is still breathing in ginger, scallion, and warm flour.
