🎨 How to color it

Color the puppy’s fur warm tan, the pumpkin costume and jack-o’-lantern bright orange, the leaves deep green, and the bats charcoal black. Use sharp colored pencils for the leaf veins, fur tufts, and narrow pumpkin grooves, then switch to markers for the big costume panels. Try a dusky purple sky behind the crescent moon so the orange pumpkins glow like they are keeping a secret.

Under a thin moon, Tobin nosed the last loose leaf on his pumpkin suit. He wanted one moonseed, the silver kind that made costumes rustle with real autumn. The patch keeper had said, “Wait until the road hums.” But the curving road lay quiet, and cold grass tickled Tobin’s paws.

Then a tiny bat dropped from a bare branch and landed on the jack-o’-lantern’s stem. Its wings smelled like rain and chimney smoke. “Not yet,” it squeaked. Tobin followed it up the winding road toward the dark little house, though burrs tugged his tail and one costume leaf tore loose.

At the top, the bat pointed to the silent pumpkin. Tobin sat. He waited through five owl hoots, then six. At last the jack-o’-lantern’s grin filled with pale light, and a silver seed clicked onto Tobin’s nose. If you spot the happiest pumpkin costume, maybe you’ll know where the moonseed chose to shine under a thin moon.
