🎨 How to color it

Layer the succulent petals in sage green and deep teal, set the tiny teardrops in pale aqua, and pick out the dotted beads with soft gold. Use sharp pencils and work from the central flower outward, since the tight curls and nested leaf panels reward slow, even pressure. For a luminous twist, shade each large pointed petal from dark at the base to lighter at the tip, as if the rosette is storing desert light.

Every day, Orla crossed the salt flats at sunrise, counting the succulent’s rings while wind hissed over the crust like sandpaper. She wanted the old spring mark before the caravan arrived, but the rosette opened only one narrow layer each morning, never sooner. Then, on the seventh dawn, a dust-devil tore her notes away and rattled the plant’s dry seed pods like tiny bells.

Because of that, Orla chased the papers into a cracked basin, palms stinging with salt. Because of that, she saw the plant’s shadow fall not outward, but inward, pointing beneath its tight center where nobody had dared to pry. At noon she waited, breath hot with mineral air, until the eighth ring loosened. A copper disk flashed under the leaves: not water, but the etched path to it. Orla laughed, packed her canteen, and followed the mark as wind hissed over the crust like sandpaper.
