🎨 How to color it

Try marigold and deep ocher for the seed circles, golden yellow for the pointed sunflower petals, sage green for the leaf sprays, and teal for the curling vines. Use sharp colored pencils and color from the tight center outward so your hand does not smudge the tiny dots and spirals. For a richer mandala effect, shade every other petal tip with a soft amber gradient while leaving the fine scrollwork a lighter glow.

Beneath the glasshouse archive, where old rain ticked on panes like fingernails, Liora carried the brass key she had never dared to use. She wanted to wind the sleeping sunflower compass before the equinox shadow crossed the floor, but its face showed only petals, leaves, and a thousand careful curls, with no keyhole in sight. Dust smelled of paper and warm soil; even the vines seemed to hold their breath.

She searched the rim, the carved stem, the back plate—everywhere except the center, because no one touched the center. At last, with one small turn of courage, Liora bent close to the tightest spiral of seeds. There, hidden in a dot no wider than a freckle, waited the keyhole. The compass opened with a soft click, and its petals leaned, not toward the sun, but toward any brave hand seeking a way through the dark. Ever since, sunflowers have kept a secret spiral at their hearts, beneath rain that ticks like fingernails.
