Before the gulls finished their squawk-squawk breakfast, Bena tapped the boat rail and whispered, “I will count every fish without one giggle.” The net came up wet and heavy, smelling of salt and splashes. One fish, two fish, three fish—then a round little fish blew a bubble right on Bena’s nose.
Bena snorted, but he kept counting. The waves slapped plip-plop, and the warm sun peeked over a cloud. He tucked the smallest wiggler near the net’s soft edge, where it would not be squished, and nobody saw him do it.
Then the smallest fish winked. Not at the sea. At Bena! The other fish opened tiny mouths as if they were counting too: one boy, two hands, three freckles. Bena laughed so hard the boat rocked kindly, and next time you see that bursting net, check which fish looks ready to count you back.
