🎨 How to color it

Color the dove pearl white with pale gold rays, the little flames orange and yellow, the stone arch warm gray, and the disciples’ robes in blues, rusts, and creams. Use sharp colored pencils for the robe stripes, sandals, and patterned coat, then fill the larger wall and arch stones with smooth marker strokes. Try making every flame a tiny two-color glow, with yellow at the center and orange around the edge.

Every day, Toma pressed scraps of dyed cloth under a flat stone and stitched one bright letter before the market bells clanged. He wanted to hang his own banner for the feast, not one copied from his uncle’s shop, and his fingers smelled of wool, lamp oil, and copper dust. Until one day, a sudden wind snapped through the alley and flung his half-finished banner onto the roof of a crowded upper room. A traveler with wind-tangled hair caught the trailing thread and called, “Up here—bring the needle!”

Because of that, Toma climbed the outside steps with his sewing basket bumping his knees. Because of that, he found men and women inside speaking in bursts of joy while little flames shone like festival lamps above them, and the air thrummed like a thousand wings. His blank center panel waited in his hands. Toma stitched fast: a white bird, wide wings, gold lines flying from it. When the banner finally rose in the doorway, people from the street understood where to gather. Toma’s chest felt as bright as the thread he had pulled tight himself. If you spot the wide-winged bird above the happy crowd, imagine Toma’s needle still flashing below it.
