Every evening, Hadad tugged each tent cord, tapped each peg, and whispered the number into his sleeve before the desert wind could steal it. He wanted a perfect count for Abraham’s camp, but the stars kept winking like they knew a joke. Then one night, a tiny clink came from the blackened cooking pot no one had washed yet.
Because of that, Hadad lifted the lid and found not supper, not sand, but seven white pebbles arranged like a crooked little sheep. Because of that, he carried the pot to Abraham and Sarah, sloshing onion-smell and ash-smell with every step. “The pot is counting back,” Hadad announced.
Sarah laughed so hard her scarf shook. Abraham looked up, then down at the pebbles, then up again at the crowded sky. At last Hadad saw it: the same crooked sheep, hidden among the stars where nobody had thought to look. If you trace the sky above their camp, can you find the star that snickered first?
