🎨 How to color it

Color the kayak sunset orange, the life vest bright yellow, the river sky blue, and the cattails warm brown with olive green leaves. Use broad crayon or marker strokes for the open river and hills, then switch to a sharper pencil for the kayak’s crisscross deck lines and the thin cattail stems. Try making the sun’s triangle rays alternate golden yellow and tangerine, like little vacation flags in the sky.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Rivers Bend for Paddles — Under a warm, round sun, Calder tucked a tiny brass bell into his life vest and pushed his kayak from the muddy bank. Read the full story →

Under a warm, round sun, Calder tucked a tiny brass bell into his life vest and pushed his kayak from the muddy bank. He wanted to reach the quiet reed bend before lunch, where dragonflies made blue sparks over the water. The bell had been his mother’s, no bigger than a berry, and it made only one sound: ting. Calder paddled and paddled, but the river ran straight ahead, sleepy and slow, as if it had forgotten where to go.

At the cattails, a willow breeze curled around his hat. Calder waited. He touched the bell once. Ting. The sound floated over the reeds, and the river answered with a soft swish, bending gently around the bank to carry him home. Ever since then, rivers make patient curves for paddles that move kindly. Next time you see the paddle touching the water, can you almost hear that tiny ting?
