🎨 How to color it

Use cedar brown for the dock planks, lake blue for the water, forest green for the pine trees, and bright red for the little bobbers in the tackle box. The dock has big, bold boards, so chunky crayons can fill them fast while a grown-up helps with the tiny hooks and fishing line. Try making the far hills pale purple and the water darker near the dock, as if the lake gets deeper right where the rod is waiting.

Every morning, Pip tapped the dock boards with one sandal—thump, thump—and listened for the lake to answer. He wanted to name each ripple before lunch, so he invented Ripple Riddle Race: rod points, bobber bounces, Pip guesses.

Until one day, the lake answered with plink-plink-ZING! Because of that, Pip opened the tackle box, and the shiny lures clacked like tiny bells. Because of THAT, the fishing line twitched toward the pine island, then curled back with a wet green leaf stuck to the hook. “That’s not a fish—that’s a clue!” Pip shouted.

Finally, he matched the leaf to the whispering trees across the water: the wind was tossing pine needles into the lake like secret messages. Next time you spot the waiting rod and open box, can you find where Pip’s last ripple raced away?
