Before raccoons wore their dark lace of lines, Sable kept one curled pattern hidden under her paw, warm as tea and smelling faintly of wool. At midnight, a dropped spool rolled from the basket and whispered, “Joy unshared becomes a knot.” Sable followed its thread through lamplight, over the chair, around the cup, until the secret tugged too brightly to hold. She pressed it onto her face, tail, and paws, then laughed so softly the pattern leapt to every raccoon listening beyond the walls. Ever since, raccoons carry those shared midnight swirls.
