Between two tubs of tulips, Gigi sniffed the air and wiggled her toes. Something smelled like roses, honey, and a little bit of rain. She wanted to find the newest scent before the bell over the flower kiosk went ding-ding for morning. Heart garlands swung above her head, tap-tap-tapping in the breeze, as if they were pointing the way.
Gigi followed the smell to a bouquet so round she had to hug it with both arms. “Who sent you?” she whispered. Then one paper heart flipped over, showing a tiny rosy fingerprint. Another heart flipped, then another, making a trail right back to Gigi’s own worktable. She laughed so hard the rose leaves rustled. Yesterday, she had brushed the garland while carrying fresh roses, and the hearts had saved the smell all night. Next time you see the hearts above Gigi’s bouquet, can you guess which one caught the first whiff of roses, honey, and rain?
