🎨 How to color it

Color the rainbow in classic red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, then give the waterfall pale aqua, the cliff rocks warm gray, and the pines deep forest green. Use sharp colored pencils for the narrow rainbow bands, tree needles, and rock cracks, then switch to light side-strokes for the broad falling water. Try making the mist at the waterfall’s base glow with a faint yellow-white halo, as if the rainbow is touching the spray.

Before the sun cleared the high pines, Selah tucked seven smooth pebbles into her pocket and made herself a quiet challenge: she would find every color of the rainbow in the waterfall’s mist. The canyon smelled of wet stone and cedar. Water boomed below, steady as a giant drum, while the river stitched silver curves between the rocks.

At the overlook, Selah laid one pebble down for red in a maple leaf, one for orange lichen, one for yellow grass, and kept going until only violet was missing. Then the spray lifted, cool on her cheeks, and a full arch brightened above the falls. In its shadow, her pebbles began to shine—not with color, but with tiny rings like tree trunks.

Selah held the violet pebble last and saw that each ring matched a place she had stopped to breathe. The canyon had not been waiting for her to finish; it had been keeping her company. She set the seven stones in a small curve by the path, and next time you notice the winding river below the rainbow, see if it feels like it is saving a place for your footsteps, too.
