🎨 How to color it

Color the lion’s face sandy gold, his layered mane with ocher and burnt sienna, the leaves olive green, and the tall grass pale straw. Use sharp colored pencils for the many thin mane strands, following each curved lock from root to tip so the fur keeps its flowing shape. Try adding a soft amber glow around the eyes and a few darker chestnut streaks only on the mane tips for extra depth.

Before the noon heat rang in the reeds, Soren padded to the river bend and stood beside the narrow path. Dust warmed his paws; dragonflies clicked like tiny beads above the grass. He wanted only to give the smaller animals a cool crossing, so he held still while his wide shadow fell over the mud.

Zebra foals tiptoed through. A porcupine shuffled under his chin. Even the blue lizards paused on his paw prints, breathing in the damp smell rising from the bank. Soren said nothing. His mane lifted and settled in the breeze, leaf by leaf, like a tree that had decided to be kind.

Then a weaverbird dropped from the branches with a grass stem in her beak. “Listen,” she whispered. Beneath the shadow of Soren’s mane, where no one had looked, a hidden trickle was singing through the reeds. The animals had thought the shade was his gift, but the shade had also been guarding water.

Soren lowered his head, and the first drinkers came softly, without cheers or trumpets. Next time you see his quiet eyes beside the leaves, can you find the secret place where the cool song began?
