🎨 How to color it

Color the raspberries ruby red and raspberry pink, the serrated leaves a fresh leaf green, and the crossed stems a light yellow-green. Use a sharp colored pencil around each small rounded drupelet first, then fill the centers so the berry bumps stay crisp. Try making the middle raspberry slightly darker than the two side berries, as if it is hiding in the sweetest patch of shade.

Under the clockvine pergola, where warm stone smelled like mint and sun, Zadie Raspberry tapped her tiny bead-shoes together. She had set herself a very serious challenge: make exactly three giggles before the noon chime. Not two. Not four. Three, neat as dew drops. She wiggled her stem. Ping! A leaf twitched, and her cousin snorted. “One,” Zadie whispered.

For the second giggle, she leaned left until the whole cluster creaked like a tiny wooden swing. The berries beside her bobbled in a lumpy wave, bump-bump-bump, and a beetle polishing the vine clock laughed so hard his rag flew onto his head. “Two,” said Zadie, trying not to laugh herself. The air tasted bright and sweet, like juice before it becomes juice.

Then the noon chime rang—but not from the clock. It came from inside the raspberries. Every round little bead made a different note: plink, plonk, peep! Zadie’s “third giggle” burst into a whole song, and the pergola filled with laughing leaves, beetle hiccups, and berry music. If you count the bumpy berry beads next time, maybe you’ll find where Zadie’s three giggles became too many to keep.
