Under the licorice-black dawn, Calyx tucked her tiny sugar pearl beneath her mane and listened. It hummed only when she faced the far castle, where the ice-cream towers smelled of vanilla frost and the ground made sticky little taps under her hooves. Calyx wanted to know why her pearl sang. Every step brought another question: Why did lollipops lean toward the gates? Why did wrapped candies shiver in the grass?
At the first hill, the pearl jumped free and rolled ahead. “Wait for me,” Calyx whispered, following its bright click-click over the soft sugar dust. The pearl stopped before the castle road, which was only mud then, and sank halfway in. All around it, little round sweets pushed up from the earth, one after another, making a bumpy trail no rain could wash away.
The candy keepers came running with warm caramel lanterns. They bowed to Calyx’s pearl and named it the first path-seed. Ever since, when a unicorn’s question grows too curious to stay tucked away, gumdrops rise to show the way—and if you trace this road with your eyes, you might hear that first bright click-click under the licorice-black dawn.
