Behind the highest cloud-castle spire, Quill tapped one silver claw against a roof tile—plink, plink, plink—and invented a game no one knew yet. The rule was secret and simple: tag a cloud, steal one bell chime from the tower wind, and race home before the chime faded. He wanted the first chime for himself, tucked under his tongue like a spark.
So Quill pushed off into the cold, cottony sky. His gear-shoulders clicked, his emerald wing-stones flashed, and the tower bell sang ting! He caught the sound—but a gust snatched three crystal scales from his left wing and sent them spinning down like green raindrops. “Don’t tell,” he whispered, chasing the chime anyway.
When he curved back, the missing scales were ringing on every cloud they touched: ting here, ting there, ting-ting everywhere. The game had escaped him. Quill laughed so hard steam puffed from his nose, then called, “Your turn!” If you spot the jeweled wings over the castle, keep the secret: the next ting might be yours.
