All evening, the terrace smelled of wet stone and sleeping leaves as Seren carried her little watering can from pot to pot. She wanted the moonflowers to open before the bells, but every bud stayed shut, round and stubborn as pearls. The castle flags whispered above her, hush-hush, while the path below faded into blue shadow.
At last, Seren leaned on the carved rail and heard a tiny tick inside the old crown on her head. Not a jewel. Not a loose pin. She lifted it off and found, tucked beneath the crescent crest where nobody had ever thought to look, one silver seed in a nest of velvet dust. “Wait with me,” she told it softly.
When the first bell rang, the seed warmed in her palm and breathed out a glow like milk in moonlight. Every pot along the terrace opened at once, petal by patient petal. Ever since then, princess crowns in that castle keep one hidden moonseed, and if you peek at the crown’s crescent, you may catch the hush before it blooms.
