Under the warm hush of the eelgrass hollow, Yara pressed a tiny scallop shell to her ear and waited for her mother’s old tide-song. Only a dry click answered. She tucked the shell into her crown and slipped beyond the safe coral gate, past fish that flashed like dropped coins, toward the blue crack where the reef grew colder and the water tasted of stone.
At the crack, a cloud of baby silverfish spun in frightened circles. Their school had followed a false glimmer into the dark, and the current kept stealing their squeaks. Yara could have hurried on; the shell was almost warm now, almost ready to sing. Instead, she opened it between her palms. A soft hum poured out, smelling faintly of rain on sand, and the little fish followed the sound back through the maze of coral. By the time the last tail vanished into sunlight, the scallop was silent again.
Yara returned with empty hands and salt-prickled eyes. But inside the hollow, every strand of eelgrass bent toward her, humming the same tide-song she had given away. If you follow the bubbles near her crown, you might catch where the unheard shell finally answered.
