Under the soft hush of night, Zeno tucked one paper star into his sleeve and hurried across the warm roof tiles. He wanted to place it in the temple bell before the moon slid behind the clouds. Then a breeze tugged his sleeve—fip!—and the star skittered down a slanted roof.
Zeno left the flat, safe ledge and crept after it. The tiles felt round under his toes, and his red scarf whispered behind him. A tiny owl blinked beside the star, caught in a loop of string. “Hold still,” Zeno whispered. Snip! His kunai freed the owl, but the star tore in two.
The owl dropped one silver feather into Zeno’s palm. Back at the bell, he tied feather and paper together. It rang with a gentle ting, and if you follow his scarf across the roof, you may find the brave little step where the paper star waited.
