🎨 How to color it

Color her fox ears and sweeping tail in burnt orange with cream tips, make her robe deep teal with gold trim, and give the little lantern a warm amber glow. Use sharp colored pencils for the hair strands, sleeve patterns, tassels, and lantern panels, saving broader marker fills for the robe and tail. Try fading the lantern light from yellow to peach on the nearby sleeve and tail fur, as if it has just uncovered a secret.

Under the cedar roots, where the moss smelled like rain and old coins, Sumi scratched a circle in the dirt with one claw. She had invented a game called Shadow-Tag: chase a shadow, tap it with the lantern ring, and make it say its name. She wanted the fastest shadow of all, the one that slipped between shrine stones whenever the bell went tonk. The trouble was, her lantern was empty, and the woods kept its secrets folded tight.

Sumi ran past paper charms and fern fronds, laughing softly as black shapes darted over her boots. “Got you,” she whispered, hooking the lantern ring around a shadow no bigger than a leaf. It wriggled, hissed like steam, and suddenly the blank lantern filled with honey-colored light. Inside the glow, tiny paths appeared—ant trails, fox tracks, even the hidden line moonbeams use to find puddles.

The little shadow had not been running away. It had been carrying lost light back to dark places. Sumi lifted the lantern, and every fox in the shrine woods saw the secret paths at once. Ever since, fox lanterns glow only when someone curious enough plays with the dark—and if you follow the shine near her hand, can you guess which shadow she tagged first?
