All morning, the car smelled like sunscreen, peppermint gum, and the cardboard corners of new maps. Juno pressed her face near the open window while her family rolled along the wiggly country road, trying to choose one perfect stop: the beach, the mountains, or the national park. Dad drummed on the steering wheel. Her little brother counted birds. The roof boards hummed, wub-wub-wub, in the warm wind.
At the tall signpost, everyone started laughing because each arrow sounded exactly right. “Beach!” called Mom. “Mountains!” shouted her sister. “Big trees!” squeaked her brother. Juno leaned out just enough to see a tiny brass latch tucked under the wooden post, where only ants and dropped french fries usually looked. She flicked it. Pop! A skinny fourth arrow sprang out, painted with one word: PICNIC.
The car went quiet for half a blink. Then the joy burst open so loudly a crow flapped from the fence. They parked in the shade, spread sandwiches on the map, and invited a bicyclist, a ranger, and two giggling hikers to share the melon. Before choosing any direction, they had found a vacation big enough for everyone. If you spot that signpost again, check the place nobody thought to look.
