Every afternoon, Kellan raced the valley wind from peak to peak, tagging chimney smoke with a puff of flame in a game he called Sky Relay. The rules were simple: beat the echo, loop the castle flag, and finish before the pine shadows touched the river.
Until one day, the echo did not answer. A snow squall swallowed the far watchtowers, and the bell below clanged dull as a pot underwater. Because of that, Kellan turned his game into a rescue race, flicking tiny flames onto the signal bowls before the storm could hide them. Because of that, riders on the roads saw amber dots blink alive and steered away from the iced bridge.
At the last tower, Kellan’s wings burned with tired heat, and nobody cheered; the village windows were too far below. “One more tag,” he huffed, lighting the coldest bowl just as sleet hissed on the stones. Next time you spot him looping the castle flag, can you find the relay flame that finished before the pine shadows touched the river?
