Deep under the hill, where water ticked like tiny clocks and the air smelled of cold stone, Saffron tucked one bright pebble beneath her claw. She wanted a shine no one else had seen, a secret so small it could fit under a scale. Then the old chest beside her sneezed dust.
“Don’t sit on the latch,” it whispered.
Now, you and I know chests usually stay quiet. Saffron did not. She jumped, tail clinking through coins, and the pebble popped into the lock. Click! The lid opened, but there was no gold inside—only a warm, humming light that bounced from gem to gem, up the wet cave teeth and across every sleepy stone.
Saffron laughed so hard sparks fizzed from her nose. The shine was too big to keep. She swept her wings wide, and every crystal caught a piece of it. Ever since, crystals in deep caves glow for anyone who brings a happy secret worth sharing; if you spot the one nearest Saffron’s chest, you might catch the first bright pebble still winking.
