Under the hush of the coral trench, Ivara counted the nursery buds by touch. One, two, three—too dark. The baby corals would not open without shimmer, and the moon-jellies had drifted away with the tide. Ivara nosed through sandy cracks and old shells, searching for one last glow-pearl, while shrimp clicked like tiny locks in the blue-black water.
A silver bubble bumped her horn. Then another. They were rising from a plain gray sponge that nobody visited because it smelled like wet stone. Ivara pressed her ear to it and heard a soft pop-pop song. Inside each bubble floated a speck of hidden light, tucked there by the reef during storms. “I’ll give it back,” Ivara whispered.
She breathed her own bright scale-shine into the bubbles and sent them under every sleeping branch. By morning, the coral tips blushed and opened, though no one saw who had gone dim to do it. Ever since, reef bubbles carry little lanterns inside them; next time you spot bubbles near Ivara’s curling tail, can you tell which ones are keeping her secret from the hush of the coral trench?
