Under the oldest cedar roots, Veyra pressed her ear to the cool black stone and counted seven hums. She had promised herself she would find the door that sang her name before the last firefly blinked out. Her sleeping ledge was warm, packed with moss and cinnamon ash, but the eighth hum came from below, thin as a flute note. So she folded her wings tight and slipped into the root-archive, where dust tasted like old leaves.
At the fork of three tunnels, a pale beetle clicked, “Payment for passage.” Veyra gave one small cheek scale, and the beetle tucked it into a keyhole shaped like a tear. The wall opened. Inside was no treasure, only a mirror of still water. In it, her horns framed a face she knew, but steadier. The hum had been her own heartbeat, answering the deep cedar.
She carried back a wet cedar seed instead of a prize. By dawn, she planted it beside her ledge, and the roots purred under her claws. If you study the smoke beside her smile, can you hear that eighth hum from the cool black stone?
