🎨 How to color it

Layer the skull in warm ivory and soft bone, color the flower eyes marigold orange, the surrounding leaves deep jade, and the two candles creamy white with golden flames. Use sharp pencils for the tiny dots, scallops, and curling vine lines, saving markers for the larger petals and broad skull sections. For a mischievous glow, shade the candlelight into pale yellow halos that secretly tint the nearest swirls and flower edges.

At the back of the candle altar, Hazel polished the little ivory curves around her cheeks and gathered fallen wax-sparks into tidy rows. The air smelled of marigolds, warm wick smoke, and dust that had learned to sparkle. She nudged each glimmer toward the dullest leaves, the unvisited curls, the corners no guest ever praised. No one thanked her, which was convenient; gratitude made her enamel blush.

A black speck landed on her nose and bowed. It was an ink-moth with velvet wings, carrying a thimble of stolen shadow. Without a word, the moth painted darkness behind Hazel’s brightest dots, and suddenly every quiet gift shone twice as hard. Hazel nearly rattled with laughter. All night they traded: spark for shade, glow for hush, a golden wink for a purple secret. By morning, the altar looked festive in places nobody thought to inspect, especially the little ivory curves around her cheeks.
