🎨 How to color it

Color the fluffy dog creamy white with soft gray shadows, make the patterned scarf cranberry red and pine green, and tint the bare trees pale birch brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the scarf’s tiny snowflakes, zigzags, and fringe, then switch to lighter side-strokes for the rolling snowbanks. Try giving the falling snowflakes a faint icy-blue glow so they stand out around the dog’s warm scarf.

The story behind this coloring page

Under the porch roof, the wind made Wren’s scarf whisper tick-tick against his chin. One loose blue stitch dangled from the end, the first stitch his boy had sewn crookedly last winter, and Wren nudged it with his nose before it slipped free and skated over the snow.

Wren stepped past his paw-warm hollow by the steps. The birch woods creaked like old doors, and snow touched his ears with cold pinpricks. He followed the stitch over a drift, under thin black branches, and across a place where the creek hummed under ice. When the thread caught on a thorn, Wren tugged gently—and left behind one fringe tassel from his scarf. “That’s all right,” he breathed, though his paws shook.

At the birch hollow, a nest of field mice shivered around the blue stitch, using it to tie dry grass against the wind. Wren sat beside them until the hollow smelled warmer, like fur and cedar bark. He went home without the stitch, but with the woods no longer feeling quite so far; if you spot his scarf, can you find the missing tassel that stayed behind in the snow?
