🎨 How to color it

Color the Doberman a deep rust-brown with black shading on the muzzle and back, make the wooden gate weathered cedar, and give the house trim a soft cream. Use sharp colored pencils for the collar buckle, gate latch, flower petals, and thin fence boards so the small details stay crisp. Try a golden sunset glow along the dog’s chest and the open gate, as if something secret has just been discovered beyond it.

Every evening, after the sprinklers clicked off, Sable walked the side garden in twelve careful steps: fence, lilies, stones, gate. She liked the hush after water, the peppery smell of wet leaves, and the tiny clink of her tag against her collar. Nothing was to be moved. Not one pebble. Not one petal.

Until one evening, the wooden gate would not close. Because of that, Sable pressed her nose to the latch and heard a dry papery whisper. Because of that, she nudged up a curled strip of bark wedged where no hand would look. Inside lay five milkweed seeds, each wearing a silver silk parachute, hidden safe from the mower.

Sable carried them one by one to the empty strip beside the path. “Grow here,” she breathed. By morning, no one knew why the bare soil had been softly pawed and patted flat. But weeks later, green shoots rose where the garden had been plain, and butterflies flickered like bits of warm sky. If you study the open gate, can you find the place where a dry papery whisper changed Sable’s twelve careful steps?
