🎨 How to color it

Color the dome tent in burnt orange, the pine trees in deep forest green, the rocky peaks in cool slate gray, and the clouds in pale lavender. Use sharpened colored pencils for the tent seams, tree needles, and mountain cracks, then switch to light side-strokes for the open sky. Add a mischievous sunrise glow on the tent’s mesh window, as if something handmade inside is proudly catching the first light.

Before the coffee pot burbled, Beck sat cross-legged in the tent and tied sticks, cord, and a bottle cap into what he called a “crumb catapult.” He wanted it to flick toast crumbs straight into his snack tin without attracting chipmunks. Sap made his fingers tacky, the floor smelled like nylon and pine dust, and every test went plink, bonk, or spectacularly nowhere.

By midmorning, the catapult had become a noodle launcher, then a sock flinger, then—best of all—a zipper helper with a twig handle. Beck puffed with pride when it tugged the tent door open in one clean zip. “Hand-built genius,” he whispered, and bowed to the sleeping bags.

His bow bumped a loose corner of the floor mat. Under it was a flat pocket no one had noticed, holding a note in crooked pencil: FOR INVENTORS WHO CHECK UNDER THINGS. Inside lay three buttons, a tiny screwdriver, and a rubber band stronger than a grasshopper’s kick. Beck laughed so hard the tent shook. By sunset, his zipper helper had a deluxe button grip, and the crumbs flew neatly into the tin—plink, bonk, and finally, gloriously, nowhere else. If you peek at that tent door, you might spot where a proud inventor would hide his next “hand-built genius.”
