Between the warm stones and sword-like grass, Bexley padded toward Echo Notch with his whiskers twitching. He had been saving one grand, belly-deep roar all morning, letting only tiny grumbles leak out. The rocks smelled dusty and sun-baked, and each step made pebbles click like teeth in a cup. “No roaring till the notch,” he told his own paws.
He climbed higher, past round bushes full of beetle buzz and sharp green shadows. A giggle answered from under a flat stone. Out popped a mouse wearing a thimble for a hat and dragging a clear jar stuffed with sounds: hic! peep! rumble! Bexley stared as one of his little practice growls bounced inside like a striped rubber ball. The mouse bowed. “For the sleeping porcupines,” she whispered. “Your soft roars fluff their dreams.”
So Bexley opened his mouth wide and gave the canyon the roar he had saved—but he cupped it with his paws and let only half fly out. The other half curled gently into the jar, warm as drumroll thunder. Far below, porcupines snored in perfect rhythm. If you spot Bexley among the rocks, imagine the pebbles clicking as he saves one grand, belly-deep roar.
