🎨 How to color it

Color the camper buttery yellow with teal shutters, coral star decals, a red-and-white striped awning, and deep green pine trees behind it. Use sharp colored pencils for the wavy side stripes, tire tread, bunting triangles, rug patterns, and tiny potted plants in the window. Try making the sunset sky fade from peach near the hills to pale blue above the clouds, so the campfire glows extra warm.

Every afternoon at Pinebend Turnout, Juniper checked the hills through her scratched binoculars while her aunt brewed mint tea beside the camper. She wanted to catch the strange blink that flashed from the far ridge—flash-flash, pause, flash—before the sun slid behind the pines. Every afternoon, the signal vanished before she could mark it on her trail map.

Until one windy day, the striped awning snapped like a sail and showered her with pine needles. Because of that, Juniper climbed the chair to untwist the canvas. Because of THAT, her elbow bumped a little metal latch nobody had noticed, hidden along the awning’s wooden lip. Click! A flat tin slid out, smelling of dust and rain, with a tiny mirror and a route drawn in green ink.

“Not a signal,” Juniper whispered. “An invitation.” She aimed the mirror at the ridge and flashed back. Sunlight leaped from her hand, and three quick sparks answered from the trees. Finally, she folded the map into her pocket, grabbed her canteen, and raced toward the curving trail as curiosity ran ahead of her. If you spot the striped awning next, keep watch for the latch that waited behind pine needles.
