🎨 How to color it

Color the Italy map basil green, the Colosseum warm sandy beige, the canal deep teal, and the gondolier’s striped shirt bright red and white. Use sharp colored pencils for the many arches and windows, then switch to broader strokes for the open water and sky. Try a sunset glow behind the floating map so the gondola and ancient stone feel tucked into the same golden evening.

Beside the canal, with oars clacking and garlic drifting from a café, Zadie pressed bow-tie pasta into green paint. She had given herself a challenge: make Italy’s boot shape without tracing it, using only things from her lunch bag. A breadstick became the long leg, a bitten cracker made Sicily, and three macaroni elbows stood in for bumps she was not sure belonged anywhere. “This boot looks like it stepped in soup,” she said, and snorted.

The gondolier, Piero, hummed as he poled past tall windows and rippling doorsteps. Zadie held up her homemade map to dry in the warm air. The canal flashed silver. The Colosseum arches on her postcard seemed to wink from her backpack, as if Rome itself approved of noodles doing geography.

Then a breeze lifted the paper from Zadie’s fingers. Instead of falling, the wet green boot fluttered upward and hung in the sky, huge and proud, with Sardinia and Sicily bobbing neatly below it. Piero tipped his straw hat. “Signorina, your lunch has become a landmark.” Zadie sat taller in the gondola, paint on her thumbs, pride fizzing like soda. If you spot the little boat under that big wobbly boot, you may know exactly whose hands made it.
