At first light, Selka raced through the jeweled atrium with saffron dust on her sleeves and festival bells snapping bright notes above the tiled floor. The great floor-flower had been polished until every petal-shaped inlay flashed, and she carried a brass cone meant to catch the first shout of the day. Around her, vines carved in the walls seemed to whirl faster with each footstep, as if the whole chamber wanted to run beside her.
The petals opened in rings, and people poured in laughing, clapping, stamping, tossing ribbons that smelled of mint and hot sugar. Selka lifted the cone to the domed roof, ready to send their cheers out through the high vents—then heard a second celebration answer from below. Not an echo. Beneath the smallest round stone at the mandala’s heart, a hidden vault hummed with thousands of stored joys: old parade drums, wedding whistles, baby giggles, the thunder of dancers long gone.
Selka knelt, turned the center seed, and the secret sound rushed upward in a golden roar. The new crowd’s shouts braided with the buried ones, bright and unstoppable, until even the carved vines seemed to fling music into the air. At last, with saffron dust on her sleeves, Selka held the brass cone wide and let the first shout of the day become everyone’s.
