🎨 How to color it

Try emerald green for the holly leaves, ruby red for the berry clusters, deep teal for the elf’s patterned coat, and warm ivory for the curled hat pom-pom. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight spirals, petal shapes, and snowflake panels, coloring each small section from the outer line toward the center. For a festive twist, make the round chest medallion glow from pale gold in the middle to copper at the petal tips.

Under the pine observatory, where resin scented the cold beams and needles whispered against the glass roof, Corwin polished the plain round button at his coat. It had come from no ceremony, no fine tailor, only a winter cloak too small now, yet his thumb found its rim whenever the stars seemed too many to count. Around him, brass scopes turned in slow arcs, and the night made silver curls on every pane.

He held the button to his ear, as he always did before charting, expecting the hush of wool and memory. Instead, a faint ticking answered—not from the button, but from the pine boughs overhead, each needle clicking softly toward the same bright point. Corwin laughed once, very quietly. The button had never kept him tied to where he had been; it had been teaching his hand the shape of a circle, so he would recognize home when the sky drew one around him.

By dawn, the observatory smelled of frost, ink, and green sap. Corwin stitched the button back in place and marked the new star with a ring, exactly where he belonged.
