🎨 How to color it

Color the pomegranate skins deep ruby red, the packed seeds bright garnet with pale pink highlights, the long leaves olive green, and the blossoms coral. Use sharp colored pencils for the many small seed ovals, circling each one lightly before filling the centers so the clusters stay clear. Try making the whole pomegranate slightly darker than the cut one, as if its smooth rind is still holding a secret shade inside.

Every day, Sela pressed her faded red thread against the inside wall of the pomegranate and listened for the fountain court beyond the rind: drip, ring, hush. The thread looked like nothing but a linty scrap, yet it had been tied around her when she was smaller than a raindrop, and she was sure it knew the way to the song. Every day, she polished it with pomegranate juice until it smelled sharp and sweet.

Until one day, a warm knife of sunlight opened the fruit with a soft crack. Because of that, the seeds tumbled into brightness, and the fountain’s song grew huge, splashing silver in the air. Because of that, Sela saw coral blossoms overhead, long leaves bending like green oars, and a whole pomegranate resting close by, unbroken and quiet. Her red thread tugged—not outward, but around a tiny stem notch beside her.

At last Sela wrapped the thread there, and the loose seeds settled into a shining circle that held together when the breeze came. “Here,” she whispered, and the fountain answered drip, ring, hush. If you find the little crowns and clustered seeds, you may spot the place where Sela learned the song had been around her all along.
