🎨 How to color it

Color the roast turkey golden brown, the leaf-topped pie deep pumpkin orange, the cranberry bowl ruby red, and the dinner plates soft ivory. Use sharp colored pencils for the tiny berries, vegetable strips, and pie leaves, then switch to broader strokes on the big turkey and empty plates. Try a warm-to-cool tablecloth fade behind the dishes so the oval platter feels like the glowing center of the feast.

Every evening before Thanksgiving, Sela walked the long dining hall with a stack of ivory plates, setting each one beside a folded napkin and fork. She wanted the empty chair at the foot of the table to stop looking empty. The room smelled of yeast rolls and cinnamon, but that place stayed as quiet as snow.

Until one day, while sliding the last plate into line, Sela heard a papery whisper underneath it. Because of that, she lifted the plate and found a tiny card taped below, written in her mother’s looping ink: FOR THE ONE WHO NOTICES WHAT HOLDS US TOGETHER. Because of that, Sela checked under the gravy boat, the berry bowl, even the pie tin, finding more small notes naming cousins, neighbors, and old friends who had helped make the meal.

At last she set the notes around the turkey like a secret wreath. When everyone came in, the empty chair was not empty anymore; it held all the unseen hands. Next time you spot the quiet plate at the foot of a feast, listen for that papery whisper.
