🎨 How to color it

Color the pear a mellow yellow-green, the blossoms soft white with golden centers, the leaves deep orchard green, and the branch warm brown. Use sharp colored pencils for the leaf veins, flower stamens, and wood grain, then switch to smoother strokes on the pear’s wide rounded body. Try a pale blush on one side of the pear, as if the hidden sun just reached it through the leaves.

Under the cool spring branch, Orin the pear held still while bees stitched gold dust from flower to flower. He wanted to give the orchard a thank-you so large that every leaf would feel it. The air smelled of bark, new grass, and petals just opened. Above him, the blossoms nodded, and the long leaves rubbed together with a hush-hush sound.

All morning, sunlight filled Orin’s round sides. A sparrow landed nearby, tilting her head at the branch. “What are you saving?” she asked. Orin did not know. He only felt a soft, bright fullness, like laughter waiting politely in a closed room. When the breeze rocked him, something deep inside answered: ting.

The sparrow blinked. Orin rocked again. Ting-ting. Hidden where no one ever thought to look, in the small seed room at his center, five brown seeds had become a tiny orchard bell. The sound slipped through leaves, blossoms, trunks, and grass until even the far trees seemed to listen. Orin’s joy was too big to keep, so he let the breeze ring it for everyone. If you find the pear beneath the flowers, can you imagine the little bell still saying ting?
